Uber Eats Driver Requirements

If you’re over 18, have a driver's license, access to a vehicle, and a clean criminal record, you can become a delivery driver with Uber Eats in your city. You’ll need to meet all Uber Eats driver requirements and successfully register to start earning money.

Personal Uber Eats requirements

To become an Uber Eats driver, you need to:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Provide proof of identity - either a driver’s license, passport, or birth certificate
  • Pass a criminal background check (this can take up to 14 days). Once finished, you’ll receive a confirmation email and a copy of the results
  • Have a legal right to work in Australia

You don’t need to be a citizen to deliver for Uber in Australia. What you need in this case is:

  • A temporary visa
  • A full and valid overseas driver’s license with a clear photo
  • Access to Medicare or health insurance.

Business requirements

You also need to meet all business requirements, which include:

  • Valid insurance coverage for your vehicle, including your name as the insurance policyholder
  • An Australian Business Number (ABN)
  • Goods and Services Tax Registration, in some cases

Australian Business Number (ABN) Requirements

Having a valid ABN is a legal requirement for tax purposes. You will need to register for an ABN and define yourself as either a Sole Trader or an Individual. Getting your ABN takes just ten minutes when you apply online. Then, update your Uber account details with your 11-digit number.

You cannot deliver with Uber Eats until you have registered your ABN on the platform. We advise you to apply for an ABN before you register as a delivery driver with Uber Eats.

Goods and Services Tax (GST) Requirements

You’re legally required to register for GST if your annual turnover from all your ABN activities is $75,000 or more. If you carry out multiple food deliveries a day or have multiple business activities, you may reach this threshold. If you don’t register, you will face fines or even legal action.

Note that if you do both food delivery and ridesharing, you must register for GST regardless of whether your annual turnover is $75,000 or less.

When you apply for GST, it will take two to six days to register officially. You can then claim GST credits for the GST included in the price of goods you buy for your business, including fuel and vehicle maintenance fees.

Vehicle requirements for Uber Eats

You need access to an eligible vehicle, such as a car, scooter, motorbike, or bicycle, to deliver with Uber Eats. You will also need to prove you’re legally able to drive a vehicle by providing:

  • A valid driver’s license is required for a car, scooter, or motorbike
  • Proof of vehicle registration and compliance, as well as a valid expiration date
  • Your vehicle details, including registration, make, model, and year

If you wish to deliver with a bicycle, all you need to do is:

  • Take the Uber bicycle safety test
  • Make sure your bicycle is in good working condition - your brakes need to be fully functional, tyres should be inflated, and you should have lights and reflectors
  • Always wear a helmet when making deliveries

How to sign up for Uber Eats

To sign up for Uber Eats, you must complete your application for a car account and then register on the Uber Eats Driver app. It’s free to sign up, and it should take between 5 and 14 days to register.

1. Sign up for a Driver’s Account

If you haven’t already, download the Uber Driver app. This is separate from the Uber Eats app and is for both delivery and rideshare drivers.

Then, log into your existing account (if you have one) or tap to register for a new Driver’s account. You must register for a Car account if you’re planning to drive your personal vehicle.

Alternatively, you can sign up on their website.

2. Provide all documents

Uber will ask you for personal and vehicle documents to establish that you can legally work and drive in Australia. You’ll need to provide:

  • Proof of identity
  • Temporary work visa
  • Driver’s license
  • Proof of vehicle registration & insurance
  • Vehicle details

Uber may ask you for additional documents, so be prepared to provide any personal, business, or vehicle evidence required.

3. Wait for a background check

Once you’ve submitted your documents, Uber will carry out a background check and check your right to work. This can take anywhere from 5 to 14 days. You’ll need this before you can start earning money with Uber Eats.

4. Deliver food and earn money

You will receive an email confirmation when you’re registered with the Uber Driver app. You can then start driving and earning extra cash.
